This creative genius stunt was pulled off by the Burger King USA's advertising agency MullenLowe. Last year (2018) May, during the thick of the American Prom Dance season, a Burger King in Lynn, Massachusetts asked the Wendy's next door (very publicly) to prom via a storefront sign. This kind of a marketing stunt require not only a huge imagination on creative side by the agency, it also requires a lot of guts by the brand managers and marketing communications managers responsible for the brand. You never know how your arch-rival would respond and it could be humiliating and the brand could end-up being the laughing stock.
However, Burger King had the guts to ask Wendy out; “@WENDYS PROM?” and she responded like a sweet, all American country girl. Below is the tweet in which Wendy's responded to the obvious BK marketing stunt on Twitter by ACTUALLY SAYING YES but with a few conditions.
“OK, but don’t get handsy and we have to be home by 10,” Wendy’s tweeted.
Burger King then changed their sign and it's pretty adorable.
THE QUESTION IS - Will Sri Lankan ad agencies and their clients ever be this creative and risk taking.
